Detroit Red Wings — The City’s Best Hope

It’s been an awful drought in professional sports in the great city of Detroit. There hasn’t been a championship won in over 5,000 days — dating back to the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals when the Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It’s been over 3,000 days since a Detroit team has even won a playoff series — that was in 2013 when the Tigers beat the Oakland A’s in the ALDS.

And while I’m not saying the 2022–23 Red Wings are about to win the Stanley Cup — I am saying that they are a fun team.

They are still very young — but Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman made a point in the offseason to make smart free agent signings, rather than trying to get the “big splash” free agent, such as a Johnny Gaudreau. You have youth, with the likes of Dominik Kubalik, Andrew Copp, and goalie Ville Husso (who was actually a trade during the offseason, not a signing). Then you have veteran players like David Perron and Ben Chiarot to add to the core that Detroit has been building (Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond).

All of these new pieces are still trying to figure out how to play with one another, and yet they’re 7–3–2 on the season. That has…
